Cached Mode vs Non-Cached Mode In MS Exchange 2003
Non-Cached Mode
Pros
- Instant access to updates in the exchange system
- Outlook starts faster
- Less intense on the server
Cons
- Like IMAP, emails not accessible when the server is down.
Cached Mode
Pros
- Accesible when the server is down
Cons
- Outlook takes longer to start as it syncs all the folders
- Delay in propagation of changes to system
- More server intensive
I would stick to non-cached for all desktops, as it behaves much like the current IMAP system with regards to server load and network traffic. For Laptops i would switch to Cached mode, as it enables access to emails while disconnected from the network.

That’s total crap!
Cached is the way to go.
Yeah, right. Try cached mode when you have users with mailboxes of over 2GB and see what happens. Especially if the OST gets “checked for errors”. Your support overhead will increase a great deal.
Online mode for directly connected desktops. Cached mode for wireless and laptop users. That’s the smart play. Used cached mode across the board if your users are limited to, say, 500MB mailboxes or you’re a masochist.

Have about 20 or so users in an office connected with a DS1 to our data center. I was always getting complaints about it being “slow”.
I setup Cisco NetFlow on the router, and 90% of the traffic was to/from the exchange server. Enabled cached mode on all the systems, and traffic dropped down to

Several of our users have mailboxes in the 2-3GB range, and its improved/reduced network traffic considerably.
WordPress cut off my post. It cannot parse greater than or less than signs. Whatever.
Cached all the way. By far the best. WHo lets mailboxes get over 2gb anyway?
